Ustica

Ustica, one of the smaller and ancient island of Sicily  emerged long before the Aeolian islands, has become destinations for many tourists thanks to its attractive landscape including small beaches, wonderful caves derived from an irregular coastline and beautiful bays rocky as " natural swimming pool. "
But those who truly enjoy the charm of this island are the world diving enthusiasts who find themselves in a spot submerged paradise rich in flora and fauna, backdrops with a riot of shapes and colours through beautiful "flower" of the orange madrepores and colourful sponges. During the swim you can meet various types of fish, for example, greater amberjack, snapper and huge saraghi while immersed in the depths, moray eels, lobsters, sea cicadas, shrimp, or vegetative forms still living like ocean poseidonia, red gorgonians and sometimes black coral.
Thanks to all these natural riches, Ustica in l987 has become one of the most beautiful and important marine reserves of Italy.

TOWER OF SANTA MARIA
Built by the Bourbons in 1763 to defend the island from pirate raids, this tower is now the Archaeological Museum of Ustica and contains findings of prehistoric age found near the Faraglioni and relics of Graeco-Roman age who were found near Cape Falconiera.

 

CAPE FALCONIERA
In this place were found ancient cisterns to collect rainwater, a stairs made in the rock and a necropolis in hypogea that  allegedly were part of an ancient rock village dating to the III century BC

 

PREHISTORIC VILLAGE
Located near the Faraglioni (location Colombaia) this settlement dating from the Bronze Age period and consists of circular huts, still perfectly intact, superimposed a square. The village was defended by a mighty walls, still visible, formed by two curtain, 6 m wide at the base and reinforced by semicircular towers.

 

THE TOWN OF USTICA
The small town stretches as an amphitheatre around a bay where there is the port, while a road and some stairways decked of beautiful hibiscus leading to the town centre. For several years, the houses have become a source of inspiration for artists who have transformed the walls canvases on which paint with the technique of trompe-l'oeil, landscapes, portraits, still life and everything that fantasy suggests.
